Colorado Discover Ability offers many different opportunities for outdoor adventure. Just as it is with our winter program, our summer program is based on offering the most independent experience possible for the individual or group. All while having fun an learning a lot about yourself in the process.

Rafting is one of the best activities for a family or a group. Beautiful scenery, great side hikes, rustic camping, and incredible food make each of our trips unique and memorable. From a day trip to our multi-day river trips, the fun and excitement never ends.

Our knowledgeable guides have years of river guide experience and have created a few adaptations that make our river rafting and kayaking program enjoyable for everyone. From adaptive seating systems for the raft to making our camps accessible, we would venture to say that CDA makes the river and its beaches more accessible than most restaurants in town. It is an amazing transformation to watch our river-side camp come to life after a day of rafting. Participants relax, enjoy the surroundings, feast on fine food, and watch the stars shine without city light pollution. When the morning dawns and we hit the river again, as good stewards of the earth, we leave the beaches cleaner than we found them.

At Colorado Discover Ability we primarily use inflatable kayaks as well as hard-shell kayaks and canoes. We generally turn over our equipment inventory every 2-3 years so our boats are in great shape. The inflatable kayaks we use offer high performance yet provide a somewhat more forgiving ride and are much easier for us to use with our adaptive seating systems. Those that want to relax and simply enjoy the views (or fish, eat, chat), can ride in one of our 18’ self-bailing rafts guided by the trip leaders.

Rafting, kayaking and paddle sports offer an incredible opportunity for adapting to each individual's strengths. For wheelchair athletes, the main objective is to get the individual in a comfortable seating system that allows the client to comfortably balance and paddle unencumbered. CDA has designed a few different systems for various levels of injury and we continue to develop other systems to assist our clients so they can participate as independently as possible.

Besides the fact that paddling is great exercise, it also provides the opportunity to bring people together and spend time in a beautiful environment. Our trips offer a great introduction to paddle sports for anyone who wants to play on the water. As with all our programs, the emphasis is on safety and having a great time with family and friends.

Consider taking a leisurely day float down the Colorado River through the Grand Valley. Or perhaps try one of CDA's overnight or multi-day river trips on the Colorado or Gunnison Rivers. As with all CDA trips, great food, meeting new friends and having a good time are all part of the experience. Our local floating season on the Colorado River typically runs from May through September. We offer trips for groups, families and individuals. Check out our planned trips or schedule your own if you want to beat the summer heat.
